“Seeds of Hope” tells the extraordinary story of an extraordinary Congolese woman. Her accomplishments are remarkable, and yet, what’s so inspiring about Masika Katsuva is that she is, as she describes herself, “an ordinary person” – who became a hero. She is driven by love, compassion, courage, and a tireless determination, even in her darkest moments. As occurred in Bosnia in the 1990s and around the world for millennia, sexual violence is today a weapon of war in the D.R. Congo. Herself a rape survivor, Masika received the care and kindness of other women as she recuperated. (Some of the interviews contain first-person reports of disturbing war crimes.) Motivated by that support Masika has gone on to help over 6,000 other women, children and men rebuild their lives after sexual violence. Survivors in the community she created receive shelter and food, medical attention, education for the children, counseling, and eventual placement in a shelter or community. Farming and sewing help sustain them. At last count Masika had adopted 17 orphaned children. Join us to see and hear this inspiring story of Masika Katsuva as she gives forward. Doors open at 6 pm for refreshments and conversation. Movie and refreshments are free. Donations always welcome. Special Guests: Panel representing organizations which aid survivors of sexual violence and work to prevent rape. Sponsors: Co-sponsors: South Seattle Climate Action Network, Mt. Baker Community Club

From Academy Award-nominated director, Richard E. Robbins, comes "Girl Rising", a portrayal of the engaging stories of nine unforgettable girls from around the globe. We see these ordinary girls struggle to overcome nearly impossible odds while pursuing their dreams. "Girl Rising" witnesses the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world. Award-winning writers help tell the girls' stories. Other artists, including Meryl Streep, Alicia Keyes, Salma Hayak, and Liam Neeson, lend their voices to make this an inspiring and eye-opening film. Special Guest: Seattle teen activist Alina from Girl Up! will join us. Community discussion follows the film.
